Our mission

The South Carolina Military History Foundation is dedicated to supporting the South Carolina Military Museum and the preservation of South Carolina’s rich military heritage. Your membership allows the Foundation to continue in its mission to celebrate and honor the service of South Carolinians, grow the Museum collection, and expand education programs for all ages. COL Dale Ellenburg, USA (Ret)

Board Chairman

Dale Ellenburg is a 1971 graduate of Clemson University. After being released from active duty in July 1972, he attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) at the Palmetto Military Academy and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1976 in the Signal Corps. His military career involved a number of key assignments, including commander of the

2-263rd ADA Battalion and the Chief of Staff, 263d Army Air Missile Defense Command. He retired with over 35 years of service.

MG Herbert L. Newton, USA (Ret)

Past chair

Laurie Newton’s military service began in September of 1969. He attended the Palmetto Military Academy and was commissioned as an Armor officer in March of 1973. He served as the Commander of Company A, 1-263rd Armor Battalion, as well as Operations Officer, Executive Officer, and Commander of 1-263rd Armor Battalion. He would later go on to command the 263d AAMDC in Anderson, SC, the 218th Enhanced Separate Brigade in Newberry, SC, the 59th Troop Command in Columbia, SC. He retired after serving as the Deputy Adjutant General, South Carolina Army National Guard.

BG Marie Goff, USA (Ret)

Secretary

Marie Goff retired from the South Carolina National Guard after serving over 37 years. She is married to COL Eddie Goff, USA (Ret). Today, she is a writer, photographer, and public speaker, with articles and pictures published in SC Wildlife Magazine and The Southern Edge Magazine.

In 2023, an exhibition at the SC State Library featured 36 of her photographs, and her images are published in the 3rd edition of Scenic Driving South Carolina.

COL John Bozard, USA (Ret)

John Bozard was born and raised in Winnsboro, SC. He graduated from Presbyterian College with a BS in Business Management. A combat veteran, his military career spanned 30 years, including command at the Battalion level. Bozard was a retail management banker with First Citizens Bank for 30 years and has spent the last 8 years as a branch manager with First Reliance Bank. He and his wife Holli have one daughter and one granddaughter and reside in Lexington, SC.
